1. Today you will be taking the Benchmark #2 during both periods. 
Ms. Prestridge will come in during these periods to explain which one you are doing and to help answer any questions you may have. 

2. If you get done early, you may read an AR book. If you don't have one you may borrow one from the classroom library. 

HW: Read 30 mins and continue working on any missing assignments. It's better to turn in things late for some points taken off than to receive a ZERO!

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend!


4th period - L.A.
Announcements: 
New Reading log for the week is up in your Language Arts Google Classroom. 


1. Share your 250 word Winter Break essay with a classmate. Be sure to read through your classmate's essay. Proofread for punctuation and grammar mistakes but also, more importantly, provide them with positive feedback to help them improve their story.  

  1. Share your essay with at least 2 different people. 
  2. What things should you be looking for as your read your classmate's work? If something is unclear to you, ask about it. If you can think of a more descriptive or precise word to use, suggest it. If your partner made a basic mistake with capitalization, spelling, or punctuationpoint it out
  3. There are a couple of ways to make suggestions and comments. You can use the "Suggesting" function within Google Docs, where you can make suggested edits that the writer can then later accept or reject. 
  4. Secondly, you could also simply highlight text and make comments and suggestions that way.
  5. Finally, your peer editing should include a balance of corrections, suggestions, and compliments. Positive feedback is important too!
  6. If you haven't done the 250 word essay, guess what? You still need to do it. You will be docked points for it being late!

2. Today we will begin reading The Circuit by Francisco Jimenez. Before we start reading, make a prediction about what the story will be about. What led you to think about your prediction? As we read pay close attention to vocabulary, big ideas, and key understandings. We will discuss all of these as a class and/or work on independent activities to help us better understand the story.  




Homework: Read 30 mins. and work on any classwork that's past due or that will be due.

**Starting this week, you will all be REQUIRED to read 30 mins. a day outside of school. There will be a Reading log entry due by the end of the week! It can be found in your Google Classroom folder.**

1. Independent reading - AR (this does not count towards your Reading Log entry)
  • if you don't have an AR book or have already finished your book(s) pick and choose an article from NewsELA (your choice).
2. Guided Activity
A diamante poem can be about any topic. However, the form of the poem needs to follow a strict pattern. Let's take a closer look at an example:

  • finished? By now you should have the Acrostic poem complete as well. If you don't it's LATE, but you can still submit it to Google Classroom for credit. 
5th period - S.S.
1. CNN Student News - This Tuesday, they're featuring stories related to Martin Luther King, the Iran nuclear deal, the goal of landing a rocket, and the largest dinosaur on record.

2. Google Drawing of South Asia. Use the textbook as a resource if needed. You will draw it out, DO NOT copy and paste from Google Images! 

*Remember, South Asia is not just India! It includes other smaller countries as well!
  • Make sure to LABEL the major river systems, seas/oceans, mountain ranges, and bordering countries that make up South Asia.

Good morning/afternoon everybody. Here's what's going on today!
Just a reminder the Winter Break essay won't be due until next week. All other work, "Geography of India" slides and vocab. will be due TOMORROW (01/15/16)!

Language Arts:
Star Testing and Poetry

1. Star Testing - You will have all period to do this test. Please, take your time with it. Do not feel like you have to rush through it. It's a very important test to assess how far you've come in your reading. Take your time!!!

2. Acrostic Poetry
What is an acrostic poem? A poem that uses the letters in a topic to begin each line. All lines of the poem should relate to or describe the poem. 

  • it does not need to rhyme or have a specific meter
  • however, if you are a skilled writer it could have both!
TASK: Think of a word or topic you'd like to discuss. Brainstorm words or phrases that express information or characteristics about your subject.

Good morning/afternoon everyone. I hope everyone is having a great day thus far. Here's what's going on for today.

4th Period - Language Arts:
Today you'll be writing about your winter break. At the end of composing, editing, reediting, and polishing it up you'll end up with a finely tuned essay (~250 words). You will open a NEW word document on your Google Drive and title it (eg. My Winter Break or whatever you choose to title it). If you don't have your chromebook, please take out or grab a piece of binder paper.  Remember to include as much detail and information you can.

Describe your winter break. Did you go anywhere? Did you visit any family? Any family visit you? If you celebrated Christmas, how did you celebrate? What types of gifts did you receive? What kind of food did you eat? Please be specific and provide enough info. You will be constructing one essay at the end of this. *These are just some questions to get you thinking and started on your essay. You can write about anything that you did over the break!  It should be 250 words!

2. If you think you finished early, go back and read what you wrote. Does it makes sense? Have a classmate read it. 

5th Period - Social Studies:
Indian Geography Slides
You are to create slides for the following questions. Please provide pictures/illustrations and text (words) to answer the questions. Make it your own! Have fun with it and be creative! You can use Google or any other available resource (textbooks, Wikipedia, Google Images, etc). Make sure to cite your illustration. MAKE SURE TO USE YOUR OWN WORDS! Do not just copy and paste.  

*To create slides, first go to your Google Drive. From there click on NEW and then click on Google Slides.

  1. Your name, date, and period as well title of the assignment.
  2. What continent is India in?
  3. Where in Asia is India located? (is it in the northern part? southern part? southeaster part? etc.)
  4. What type of climate does India have? What type(s) of monsoon seasons are there?
  5. What are the main river systems in India? Where do they start and what ocean do they end in? Which oceans and seas border India?
  6. Which mountain range is in India? What’s the highest peak (altitude)? Please provide the altitude and longitude of this peak.

2. Guided Activity: Cyber Bullying

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Examples of cyberbullying include mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles. Learn more about the nature cyber bullying by watching the video below.

Who has the power to stop cyberbullies? The teachers, principals, parents, the targets/victims, the bullies, or those who share and laugh at the mean posts - the bystanders.

3. Read this webpage Stomp Out Bullying with your neighbor (if you don't have one, I'll assign one) to learn more about the differences between bystanders and upstanders. After reading, respond to the question on the classroom stream:
4. Explain the difference between a bystander and an upstander? Why does being an upstander require bravery?
5. Open and complete the Cyberbullying Lesson with your neighbor - make a copy of the document from the link.
6. Complete the two part quiz on your own (at the end of the lesson document).

7. Last month, some Lakeview 7th graders completed a survey on bullying and bystanders. Please click here to see the survey results. Do any of the results surprise you? Do you consider the results to be good or bad news? Complete the Analyzing Survey Results document in your folder.

1. But first, let's take a look at CNN Student News "Explore the history and tradition of the State of the Union address, examine the parts of the brain involved in driving, and navigate the open sea in a rowboat".
2. World Atlas Exploration - take a minute to browse through your Ancient Civilizations texbook pp. A2 - A8.
